Spring Island Makes Hope Happen

Hopeful Horizons is the Lowcountry leader in ending child abuse, domestic violence and sexual assault.

When the phone rings at Hopeful Horizons, it might be a woman who is trying to leave a violent relationship or a parent whose child who has been sexually abused by a friend or neighbor. Sometimes that phone call is in the middle of the night and it’s a victim of sexual assault.

For 40 years, Hopeful Horizons has answered all of those calls and provided hope and help for victims of child abuse, domestic violence and sexual assault.

Will you join us to provide hope and help to families and individuals who are experiencing trauma? We need you so that we can continue to serve victims right here in the Lowcountry for another 40 years.

Spring Island's History with Hopeful Horizons

A group of Spring Island women gathered in 2013.  They listened to Shauw Chin Capps share the story of Hope Haven, a local nonprofit children’s advocacy and rape crisis center.  The organization employed five counselors that served victims of child abuse and sexual assault.

Shauw Chin estimated Hope Haven staff were reaching a small percentage of those in need.  At the end of the Spring Island meeting, 21 hands went up, each offering $1000.  Shortly after the meeting, word spread, and the “Spring Island $21k” quickly became the “Spring Island $36k."

Later in 2013, this seed money became key leverage in helping qualify Hope Haven for its largest ever grant of $716,000. Those funds were put right to work, enlarging the counseling staff and broadening services.

In 2017, Hope Haven and CODA (Citizens Opposed to Domestic Abuse) joined forces to become Hopeful Horizons, a children’s advocacy, domestic violence and sexual assault victim services organization with a mission to protect, treat and prevent. Once again, Spring Island stood alongside and supported the organization to help ensure its ability to meet the needs of victims and their families.

And now, in 2023, thanks to continued Spring Island support, Hopeful Horizons was able to assist more than 1,200 local victims of child abuse, domestic violence and sexual assault.
